S/he will assure that NACCHO takes a leadership role in the advancement of the practice of local public health and maintains a high quality organization that effectively addresses the needs of local health departments (LHDs).

Ideal candidates will have five (5) to ten (10) years experience managing a state, regional or local department of health, a nonprofit membership organization, and/or association with responsibility for program management, administrative supervision, staff and program oversight, and Board of Directors interaction preferred.

PHI Employment Opportunities

Public Health Institute is a large non-profit public health organization conducting a broad range of public health research, training, and technical assistance programs in California, throughout the nation, and around the world is seeking a full time Health Educator IV for the Regional Asthma Management and Prevention Initiative (RAMP). This position is located in Oakland, CA.

RAMP aims to reduce the burden of asthma by enhancing collaboration among diverse constituents to address a broad array of activities, ranging from clinical management to environmental prevention. RAMP is a clearinghouse of asthma information, provides technical assistance to asthma coalitions, and serves as a regional convener in the Bay Area. RAMP also coordinates Community Action to Fight Asthma (CAFA), a statewide network of asthma coalitions working to shape local, regional and state policies to reduce the environmental triggers of asthma for school-aged children where they live, learn, and play. Finally, RAMP serves as a Center for Excellence in Eliminating Disparities (CEED) related to asthma among African Americans and Latinos.

Program/Policy Associate Addressing Asthma Disparities (Health Educator IV)

The Health Educator IV manages RAMP’s activities related to state policy work and to regional advocacy efforts. With the regional advocacy efforts, the incumbent will lead some of RAMP’s collaborative regional advocacy activities, such as addressing asthma in schools or child care settings or addressing the connection between asthma and the built environment, housing, and/or diesel pollution. With the state policy work, the incumbent will lead a statewide network of community-based asthma coalitions through a process to identify policy priorities and then advocate for them, in collaboration with key partners.

Duties & Responsibilities: In coordination with other RAMP staff, the Health Educator IV will manage activities for at least one of RAMP’s regional advocacy committees. Activities include:

  • Facilitate committee meetings. Lead the committee through a strategic planning process and develop work plans.
  • Maintain/expand membership of the committee and build/strengthen partnerships with key partners throughout the region.
  • Strengthen connections of RAMP’s committee work to African American and Latino communities and community-based organizations and work toward the development of best practices unique to those communities.
  • Represent RAMP on regional collaboratives.
  • Organize and facilitate capacity-building workshops, such as round table dialogues and trainings.

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for communications and public relations strategies, activities and products for a network of asthma coalitions, as well several other programs implemented by RAMP.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a branding campaign for RAMP’s programs
  • Plan and implement media advocacy campaigns and other media relations efforts, including media events as needed
  • Manage website content and design development
  • Produce bi-weekly e-newsletter for RAMP
  • Help integrate program’s communication platforms, including website, e-newsletters, and other communication methods
  • Produce publications, including newsletters, booklets, brochures, press releases, and fact sheets
  • Oversee work of artists, graphic designers, printers, and other contractors/vendors to ensure quality, adherence to deadlines, and completion of work within budget
